Taste of Tattie Scones, how not to make them!

Visiting Nairn on a gorgeous sunny weekend and with lots of gorgeous food to eat, what more could you want? Taste of Nairn show cases the local amazing produce of the wider Nairn area, including cakes and bakes, tea, coffee, whisky, gin, vegan foods and the amazing Tattie Scone World Championships!

In a moment of madness I signed up to the Tattie Scone championship and ended up being in the first group of victims to be put under pressure cooking in the public domain.

Taste of Nairn 2022

I loved it. The recipe was already lying on the long table, with cold tatties, butter, flour and gas burners for all. My secret recipe was Nutmeg (fantastic with tatties) and freshly grated parmesan (top tip from Dionne my friend). However, having never made a Tattie Scone before, I had no idea what the correct consistency was, how much of the cheese to add (I added it all, oops), whether to add butter to the frying pan to cook them (don’t add it, your tattie scones will be a bit soggy).

Parmesan and Nutmeg my secret ingredients on the plate

The pressure was on, the heat was on, and my Tattie Scones were going to be a bit wee. I borrowed a cookie cutter and cut them into round shapes like a traditional ‘sweet’ scone and cooked them in the buttered pan. The pan wasn’t hot enough, or I shouldn’t have added butter. Making a Tattie Scone, should be easier. About 5 minutes on the first side in the frying pan and another 2 or 3 minutes the other side. I do think my burner wasn’t hot enough as the first one cooked great (nice golden and dark brown colour) but the others were a bit ‘peel wally’, but the smell was divine, melted cheese and nutmeg. I think, despite my. name, ‘Rush’ I was the last to finish, three of my slightly floppy scones went off to the judges table, and the remaining three, ended up in my tummy. Yum!
