We enjoy cycling to Cawdor which is only 8 miles inland from Nairn. The quieter backroads are a great way to explore the countryside around Nairn. In the sleepy village of Cawdor we recommend you visit the local pub for some refreshments. The Cawdor Tavern has a beer garden and some tasty brews.

The beautiful village of Cawdor is originally an estate village which grew in relation to the nearby Cawdor Castle. 4. Auldearn

I believe visiting Auldearn from Nairn is easy and accessible. I love to visit Auldearn on my bike. Cycling the backroads it is easy to avoid the busy A96 and discover this little gem of a village only 4 miles from Nairn. Read about my beatiful day cycling to Auldearn from Nairn using this link.

Auldearn has a beautiful Doocot (a house for pigeons), which dates from the 17th Century and is very majestically perched on top of a hill in the sleepy little village.

Did you know that Auldearn is home to Scotland’s most famous witch, Isobel Gowdie? Isobel Gowdie is a witch from the 17th Century who confessed to witch craft. Isobel’s story is unusual as her original confessions survive to this day. Find out more about Auldearn by reading my other blog about cycling to Auldearn and Isobel Gowdie. 5. Ardersier

Ardersier is another former fishing village located 4 miles West of Nairn. Undoubtably this village is a great place to explore after a morning visiting it’s famous neighbour Fort George.

Built after the Battle of Culloden this impressive Fort offers a Highlander’s museum, a pet cemetry and audio guide (using your own phone). Simply watching from the ramparts on a glorious sunny day is a wonderful way to spend a day. Certainly you stand a great chance of spotting a dolphin in the Moray Firth.

Finally after visiting Fort George, I recommend you walk into Ardersier, along it’s walk way. For some refreshments why not visit the Gun Lodge, The Starr Inn or PACE Cafe? Find out more about what Ardersier has to offer by using the following link.
