Walk Nairn, Delnies Wood to Secret Beach

mandyerush

Pristine white sands, empty beach, natural sand dunes and cake what more could you want from a walk?

Secret Beach or Whiteness is a continuation of Nairn Central Beach, it is rarely visited as it doesn’t have a village or town right on it’s door steps, thankfully! It is just waiting for you to discover and enjoy it and it is well used by dog walkers and families.

Secret Beach Bakes are a micro business which I had seen advertising gorgeous cakes in it’s honesty box and I thougth a walk to Secret Beach with the hope of a rewarding cake would be the perfect Sunday morning walk. A walk which includes cool forest on a hot summers day and empty beaches and blue seas, I couldn’t ask for more.

Below you will find the details of my guided walk from Altonsyde, through Delnies Wood and down to Secret Beach, also known as Whiteness. The walk took me approximately 2 hours and I did speed up as I walked all the way back to the house with my Strawberry Cheesecake and I didn’t want it to melt! The distance is approximately 5miles/ 8km.

At Delnies Woodland there is a notice board on your right hand side. This is where you enter the woods. Follow the way marked path. The path eventually skirts around Delnies Campsite and crosses the A96/ Inverness Road.

Notice board in woodland advising caution

When approaching the busy road, A96/ Inverness Road, use caution.

I did the walk on a Sunday morning, not too early. And this poor little badger had been freshly killed that morning by a vehicle. Use caution when crossing this busy road.

Hilton of Delnies sign falling into wheat field

Walk down through more woodlands until you hit a tarmaced road, a B road, and then turn right. Walk until you see the fallen sign for the Hilton of Delnies, you are turning between two fields, onto the farms single track road, which will take you to cake and the beach.

Walk down the farm road towards the beach.

Secret Beach Bakes honesty box

At the bottom of the road, at the Farm house gate you will find the Honesty Box. If you are lucky, as I was at 10am on a Sunday morning, the Cake Honesty Box of Secret Beach Bakes was being filled with delights. You can choose to pay by Paypal or cash. Find out if they are open/ replenished by visiting their Facebook Page.

Continue down towards the sea, through a small carpark, over a stile. Over the Sand Dunes.

Maybe if you brought some drinks or a flask you are ready to enjoy your cake on the beach?

Walk back along the beach towards Nairn. Walk back up through the golf course to get back to Altonsyde (heading back up the seaside half of Sandown road, past the allotments).
